Sample of Thank You Letter for Present from Child to Relative
Dear Aunt Ellen,
Thank you very much for my Christmas presents. I know that the scarf and hat will keep me very warm this winter when I play at the park and in the back garden. I also know that my friends and I will enjoy watching the DVDs that you brought me when it is too cold to play outside. I have not seen most of these DVDs before so I am very excited to watch them, and the ones that I have seen I already know that I like and will watch over and over again. Maybe one day you will be able to come over and watch them with me. I would like that very much.
Thank you again for all of my lovely presents.
Love,
Katherine

WEEK 6 READING TIME- THE SWORD IN THE STONE
King Arthur and Merlin the Magician
Once upon a time there was place called Camelot that was ruled by a king named King Pendragon. When his son was born, there was a lot of fighting in the kingdom, and a wise magician, Merlin, told him that it would be best to hide the baby and raise him without anyone knowing that he was the prince and would someday be the king. The king agreed, and the baby, whose name was Arthur, was taken by Merlin to live as a servant in the home of a rich man and his son. While he was growing up, he was not called Arthur; instead he was given the nickname, Newt. When King Pendragon, died there was a big fight over who would become the king, so Merlin used a magic spell to bury a sword in a big stone. On the stone was a sign that said ‘Whoever can pull this sword from the stone will be the next king.’ Many knights and other nobleman tried but couldn’t pull the sword out. One day, Arthur was at a contest of bravery helping the nobleman’s son. When he broke his sword during a fight, he sent Arthur to find him another one. Arthur looked everywhere but couldn’t find a sword. Running back to tell the nobleman, he came to the stone with the sword stuck in it. He was scared and so he didn’t read the sign. Instead he climbed up on the stone and pulled on it. It slid out of the stone easily and began to shine brightly. Merlin, who knew all along who Arthur was told everyone at the contest what Arthur had done and he was the new king. Arthur was still a boy, so Merlin stayed at the castle with him to help him learn how to be a good king. Arthur and Merlin were good friends and Arthur became much loved as the king of Camelot.
Use the story to answer the questions and complete the puzzle below.
1. What was Arthur’s father’s name?
2. Who told Arthur’s father to hide him when he was a baby?
3. What was Arthur looking for when he found the stone?
4. What was the name of the kingdom Arthur becomes the king of?
